Otis Community Garden

I raked our flower beds and was excited about the green tendrils reaching up through the dark brown soil. It is the month of April and I am sitting outside with dinner appreciating the clear sweet sound of the birds singing to each other. I see the mergansers, the heron has returned, the beaver is busy at work, and the otters are playing in the open water. Spring has arrived.
Last Friday, given weather predictions for Saturday, a call was made for help and half a dozen dedicated members came out to help. They removed the tarps, checked for holes in the fence, cleaned out the shed and checked the equipment. The garden will start by planting spinach, early lettuce, snow and snap peas and frisee.
A local Boy Scout troop has agreed to move large amounts of compost from Meadow Farm into the vegetable beds. Their efforts and giving of their time will really be appreciated. We thank these volunteers.
There is a great feeling of satisfaction that you get from working at the garden. Some include picking for two pantries, enjoying delicious vegetables, creating friendships and knowing that you are doing good. Membership applications close on May 1st. We look forward to a season of yummy, nutritious vegetables. We rejoice in watching a seed grow into a beautiful vegetable to consume or share. Happy spring.
