Otis Community Garden: Special Thanks to Our Fence Builders
By Margie Klein
October 2026
We gathered in Town Hall for our season wrap-up meeting. It was supposed to be outside, but the rain pushed us inside. As gardeners, we know all about weather. We talked about things that went well, what we would like to see differently next season, any new vegetables to add, and our cleanup, which will be finished by the end of October. It is bittersweet to say goodbye to our garden. The towering sunflowers are reaching towards the sky still. The brightness of the flowers is a reminder of the gift of sight and the beauty that surrounds us. The tomatoes are still hanging from the vine and around them clumps of basil.
There are still more vegetables to pick, but I embrace the changing seasons. I have no choice, Mother Nature waits for no one. We all looked back with gratitude at all that we have accomplished together. From the first seed planted in the spring to the abundant vegetables harvested throughout the summer, the garden has been a place of growth–not only for our vegetables but for our community.
Our conversation also focused on our new fence. If anyone drives by and sees it, it is beautiful. We are so appreciative to Pete Stearns for continuing to let us stay on his property. Our fence was erected quickly and is a sight to see. We give special thanks to the Smile Like Jack Foundation and Tonlino & Sons Crushed Stone for their generous donations.
A special thanks goes to our fence builders. Their hard work, skill, and dedication help protect the garden and create a safe welcoming space for everything we planted. We are grateful for the time and effort they gave to strengthen and improve our garden. A big shout out goes to Troy Fluckiger, Chris Cortigiano, Gordon Middleton, and Brian Palazzi.

The vegetables we grew were shared with two pantries which provided fresh food to those that needed it. As the garden settles in for the winter, we can feel proud of what we created together. We are grateful to every volunteer who helped make this season possible, and we look forward to gathering again when it is time to take off the tarps and plant new seeds.
