Young Otis Entrepreneurs

If you look up the word “entrepreneur” in the dictionary, you will learn that individuals who start a new business venture need to identify opportunities, get their necessary equipment together and manage the operations of their venture. Hearing about two nineteen-year-old brothers, both born and raised in Otis, it was an easy decision to seek them out and write about them.

There is not a person in Otis who doesn’t know the name Loring or Saloomey. Put them together and you have Tony and Sara Saloomey-Loring, a couple who were both born and raised here. They have a set of triplets, Megan, Will and Charlie. Megan graduated from Mt. Everett and is on the road to becoming a registered nurse. Will and Charlie took a different route to Smith Vocational School in Northampton and studied plumbing (Will) and electrical (Charlie). As teenagers, they began accompanying their dad around town mowing lawns and also learned from their Loring grandfather who also mowed lawns. “Our father and grandfather set a great example for us. We were raised to understand that it takes hard work to get what you want in life” agree Charlie and Will. Their mother Sara seconds this, “Tony and I are incredibly proud of them. At nineteen years old they are not afraid of hard work. Our triplets are all hard working and prove it by their work ethic and commitment to what they are doing.” She also said that the triplets have been a “delight to raise and have grown into wonderful adults. Even though they are young, they are all responsible and doing really well. My husband and I are both from large families and as they say, it takes a village, and our village was very supportive and helpful with the triplets.”
Last year you might remember Will was mentioned for his quiet but meaningful mowing of an overgrown lawn that needed attention in town. These boys certainly have their heads and hearts in the right place. They run Loring Property Services with one employee, Gavin Flaherty of Becket, and an aunt who does the bookkeeping work for them, and occasionally a buddy or two that help out. They do mowing, plowing, all property services, including excavation and tree removal. When they started last summer they had forty lawns, but now they are up to one hundred and thirty. “We are exceeding our wildest dreams. We never imagined the business would grow so quickly and be so successful. It feels good to do what you want and make your own money. It’s good to be in charge,” the brothers say. They generally have a good time while working and have avoided the hazards of the job like running over lawn sprinkler heads and tennis balls. They work hard every day. Watch out world as there is no stopping them!
Oh, did I mention that they both have full time jobs with Vanzandt Plumbing and Heating in Lenoxdale? This makes this story all the more amazing, as they have built their own business around this full time job. The brothers have big plans and dreams and they are living them. They recently bought a piece of property and will be building their own home in the not too distant future. That one room school house in Monterey launched the triplets on their life’s journey and there is no stopping them. They understand the value of hard work and the value of family. They have a strong bond with both the Loring and Saloomey families and have aunts, uncles and cousins galore. When cousin Jack O’Brien’s name came up you could feel the sadness Will and Charlie still feel since losing their dear cousin. The family and community banded together then and with the support and love of their parents and family, the Loring brothers have built a business and a life and stayed true to their roots and to their beloved community. “This is where we belong.”
